The faces of Rustwater

Here you'll find a glimpse into our playable ancestries, but to find out more in-depth lore & mechanics for each please visit the Rustwater rulebook.

Human
Wastelander, Sheltered, Bloodborne
The Human Ancestry has been divided into three parts, the descendants of those who survived the Great Collapse on the surface (wasteland), the survivor’s whose ancestors took to underground bunkers at the beginning of the collapse (sheltered), and the descendants of those who were bred by vampire compounds starting at the beginning of the collapse (bloodborne).

Aware
Positive Memory, Death Memory
While there have been stories of ghosts since the dawn of time, most present scholars believe that the stories were mostly imagination. However, the older beings of the Earth have since confirmed occasional encounters with the Restless before the Great Collapse. There are no verifiable records of the Aware prior to 2040, though many believe that they were around. Since 2040, sightings of Aware have been becoming more and more common, but so, too, have sightings of the Restless, Aware whose items are no longer able to properly bind them to this realm but whose consciousness is unable to move on.

Fae
Dawn, Dusk
The Fae were among the first beings to come out of hiding after the great collapse. As a show of solidarity and compassion, the Elves and the Fae made contact with the Humans in the year 2035. Skilled in Magic, the Fae were able to help the Humans regain some of the comforts that had been lost by securing cities and restoring an approximation of technology.

Elf
Windwalker, Stonewalker
Elves have the longest history of interacting with Humans, usually without the Humans realizing that they were different beings. The Elves once had a reputation for wearing their hair long, which was mainly to obscure their ears. Generally, however, this practice has faded with time so that Elves look very little like the fantasy creatures they were often portrayed as before the Great Collapse.

Burrower
Keeper, Borrower
The Burrowers are the longest-lived known (playable) Ancestry, though the first sightings of them came shortly after the Great Collapse. The Burrowers preferred to keep to themselves, even the Borrowers who were known for leaving the Burrower nests. Fae and Elves have recently admitted that, until the Sheltered began to emerge from their bunkers with tales of the Burrowers, they were ignorant of their existence.

Conscious
Fungal Conscious, Swarm Conscious
Perhaps the oldest creatures of all, there are tales passed down from ancient Conscious that they were originally water-plants that inhabited sea life before even elves or fae walked the earth. The Conscious spore develops and is highly influenced by its environment. Conscious spores have a drive to inhabit bodies but can only bind with the dead. Though, over time, the Conscious lost the ability to bond with non-sentient creatures, you will find Conscious of all other ancestries. The Conscious revealed themselves to the Humans around 2075 and were originally mistaken for Risen due to their often unsettling appearances.

Cryptid
Humanoid, Reptilian, Aquatic, Feline, Canine, Winged
Cryptids are some of the hardest beings to discuss because they encompass so many types of creatures. Scholars argue that the categorization of “cryptid” is simply a way of not learning more about various distinct ancestries. Despite this, there are also arguments that all Cryptids come into being in the same way and, therefore, are an Ancestry of their own, which presents as several other beings. The distinctions that are generally applied to Cryptids are as follows: They are not members of other ancestries. They have magic auras (even if they don’t have magic).
Some Cryptids are born from other Cryptids, while some Cryptids come into existence as adolescents without other Cryptids being involved. The categories of Cryptids are mostly based on their body types and physical advantages based on their physiology. **If you plan to be a Cryptid, you must first submit a Cryptid Idea form, please head to Submissions**

Hybrid
Plant Dominant, Animal Dominant
There is, perhaps, no Ancestry whose origins are as mysterious as the Hybrids’. Originally appearing in the early 2100s, Hybrids were assumed to have been Humans whose adult physiology has been genetically altered with both plant and animal DNA. The Hybrids appeared in the American Southeast and disseminated quickly throughout the country and, eventually, abroad. The “first wave” of Hybrids did not live long but managed to produce viable offspring whose lines persist to this day
